‘No teacher redundancies’ announces the Catholic School Board

(Wednesday, June 12, 2019) – The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that no teacher redundancies in the elementary or secondary panels, for the 2019-20 school year, are expected.

Following a mandate from the Board of Trustees, the Senior Leadership Team and board staff worked diligently to examine the financial impact of recent funding cuts on staffing in an effort to ensure that the impact was minimal on staff, students and families.

At the secondary level, where there were changes to the pupil-teacher ratios, teaching staff retirement notices coupled with increased student enrolment enabled the panel to be staffed without the need for redundancies. This increase in enrolment was also experienced at the elementary level and, as a result, no redundancies were declared.

“We are pleased to be able to share with the system and our community that through our repeated and solid fiscal accountability, our ability to identify efficiencies and our positive working relationship with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), our Catholic school district is able to maintain the status quo. This support for student achievement is paramount and we are proud that we have met our goal and are able to support our students,” said Chair of the Board, Rick Petrella.

OECTA - Brant Haldimand Norfolk area Union President, Tom Laracy shared that, “BHN OECTA would like to acknowledge the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board for its efforts in reducing the impact of the proposed cuts to education. The Secondary and Elementary panels will not face any redundancies for this coming September because of these efforts. BHN OECTA looks ahead to continued collaboration with the Board in these times of uncertainty in education.”

As the Board plans for the 2019-20 school year, it continues to gather information from the Ministry in respect to funding details and program expectations.
