Catholic Board welcomes Student Trustee for 2020-2021

BRANTFORD, Ontario – Alex Medeiros, a grade 11 student at Assumption College School, will serve as Student Trustee on the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board for the 2020-2021 school year.

“I am pleased to welcome Alex Medeiros to the Board,” said, Chair Rick Petrella. “We understand and value the importance of student voice and know that Miss Medeiros will bring that perspective to the Boardroom table. It is important that we understand student opinions and challenges as it helps us support the creation of, and make decisions that, support the best learning environments and academic excellence.”

As Student Trustee, Miss Medeiros will work with the Student Senate to continue to focus on wellness, belonging and teaching and learning, which are fundamental to student achievement and pillars of the Board’s 2020-23 Strategic Plan. Alex also represents the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board at the provincial level as a member of the Ontario Catholic Student Trustees’ Association (OCSTA).

Alex, an accomplished and well-rounded student, is an active member of many school clubs and participates in the organizations of trips and events such as Me to We and the Catholic Leadership Conference. Outside of school, Alex connects with her community by teaching guitar, playing bingo with the elderly and volunteering at the local soup kitchen.

Although excited about her new role, Alex understands the importance of focusing on the present challenges we are facing. “Everyone’s lives have been affected in some way by COVID-19,” said Alex. “As students, our experience has undoubtedly been altered. We have had to adapt to on-line learning and our lives outside school have been changed to only being able to connect virtually. It is my hope that when we meet again in person, we take what we have learned from this experience, and focus on building or rebuilding what is important. This is how we can reconnect as a community and come together stronger than ever.”

“Miss Medeiros will have the opportunity to immerse herself in the role of Student Trustee and develop her leadership skills,” said Director of Education, Mike McDonald. “She will also see the role of our elected officials and how Trustees support the direction of the district through their Strategic Plan. I welcome her and look forward to working with her in September 2020 when she starts her term as Student Trustee.”
