2020-21 Board Spiritual Theme

Hearts on Fire (Luke 24:32) - TRANSFORM

In year one, our Journey year, we were introduced to the beautiful story of the encounter that took place between Jesus and the disciples on the Road to Emmaus. In year two, our Encounter year was rooted in the account of Jesus with Mary and Martha where we learned the importance of being present in our relationships as we encountered Christ and one another. To support the final year of this spiritual theme, Transform, we have selected the illumination of “The Call of the Disciples”(John 1:35-42) from the Saint John’s Bible to root our understanding of what it means to be transformed. Our Ontario Catholic Bishops in the Pastoral letter, “Renewing the Promise” remind us that “Our Catholic schools help to form joyful disciples as hearts and minds are opened to the transforming love of God and to the flame of faith in action. On a daily basis, Catholic schools demonstrate the joy of believing and witness the Good News to the communities that they serve” (p. 13). The Scripture passage and illumination invites us to notice how our faith is being deepened, along with our relationships with Christ and others. It asks us to consider our own baptismal calling and how we live out our faith as joyful disciples of Christ. Finally, we are encouraged to recognize the transforming presence of God within us so that others in turn may recognize the transformation in us by how our lives are motivated.

This year, we will continue to support the faith formation of staff and students by emphasizing the importance of building an interior prayer life, using Scripture to deepen our understanding of transformation as found in the Gospel narratives, and reaching out to our neighbours in need. Resources and training dedicated to improving our ability to be Catechists and strengthening home, school and parish relationships will be a focus.
