Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for Grades K-12 that examines best practices around the choices we make in operating our schools and in planning classroom programs based on the Ontario curriculum. It consists of four components: Ecological Literacy, Waste Minimization, Energy Conservation and School Ground Greening. The guiding principles of the Ontario EcoSchools program are: Student Centred, Innovative, Accountable and Builds Capacity.
Becoming Ontario EcoSchools certified takes the effort of the whole school community -- from establishing an EcoTeam, identifying the priorities and setting action plans to reporting, monitoring and evaluating the activities. Students, staff, parents and school community members supported the initiative in schools across all three of the Board’s counties.
“Being responsible stewards of God’s creation and fostering innovative leadership in both students and staff is part of our culture and directly supports pillars of the Catholic Board’s Strategic Plan,” said Director of Education, Chris N. Roehrig. “This responsibility we have is demonstrated in various initiatives system-wide and I congratulate this group of schools that has reached their goal to achieve Ontario EcoSchools certification.”
