Summer School Program - Reach Ahead

Grade 8 students can receive one grade 9 credit for attending 4 weeks in July prior
to entering their first year of secondary school in September 2019.


Reach Ahead will run from July 2 - 26, 2019

Registration opens January 8, 2019 and will close June 16, 2019.

  • The Reach Ahead program is a face to face experience that involves four (4) full weeks of daily on-site instruction for grade 8 students who will be entering grade 9 at one of our BHNCDSB secondary schools in September 2019.  The course will run from July 2 to July 26, 2019.

  • Daily attendance for all four (4) weeks is required in order to earn this Grade 9 credit. Holidays should not be taken during the duration of the course.

  • Reach Ahead courses will take place at Holy Trinity (HT) and St. John’s College (SJC) from July 2 to 26, 2019.  These are face to face courses and attendance is mandatory in order to earn the credit. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Assumption College (ACS) students will attend classes at the St. John’s College location due to significant construction taking place at Assumption College in July.

  • Bus transportation from limited central locations will be available for students in the Reach Ahead program.  IMPORTANT TO NOTE: door to door bus service will not be available.

  • Reach Ahead program hours at Holy Trinity Catholic High School will be from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM week days, July 2 to 26, 2019.  Please click here for the Holy Trinity Catholic High School bus schedule.

  • Reach Ahead program hours at St. John's College (for both ACS and SJC Students) will be from 8:10 AM to 2:10 PM week days, July 2 to 26, 2019.  IMPORTANT TO NOTE: on July 2 the start time for class will be 10:10 am instead of the usual 8:10 am.  The bus schedule will be delayed in the morning by 2 hours. It is also IMPORTANT TO NOTE that on July 26 class will be dismissed at 11:50 am instead of the usual 2:10 pm.   • Students will not be required to wear a school uniform for any of the Reach Ahead courses, however, for those taking PAD1O personal athletic clothing must be worn each day.

  • IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Lunch will not be provided so students must bring their own lunch and refreshments. Students will have access to a water fountain should they choose to bring their own personal water bottle to fill.  There will be no access to a cafeteria.

  • Students may require their BHNCDSB username and password to access course content. If students do not know thier username and password they should speak to their current grade 8 teacher for this information.  If the teacher is not able to assist, please contact Tamara Quigley, Continuing Education Secretary at

  • User name and passwords are used for the BHNCDSB online learning platform Desire2Learn (D2L).  If the use of D2L is required for the Reach Ahead course that students are enrolled in, the classroom teacher will review the D2L portal and accessing course content there in-class on July 2, 2019. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Access to D2L will not be available until July 2, 2019 when Summer School opens.  At that time, students will be able to log in to view online courses, explore tools and features, and customize their eLearning experience.

  • PLEASE NOTE: There will be not be an information night at the secondary schools as previously indicated. Instead, teachers will be emailing students directly.

  • If circumstances change and a student is no longer able to/does not wish to participate program from July 2 to July 26, 2019, please contact Tamara Quigley, Continuing Education Secretary, at prior to July 2, 2019.  The student's name will be removed from the registration list without academic penalty.  Please note:Parental consent is required for removal from a course for all students under the age of 18, so if a student is under the age of 18 a parent must be the one who makes the contact.

  • A communications plan in place, so student registrants and their parents/guardians should expect to see informational emails in April, May and in June.

will now be offered at St. John's College with transportation provided from central locations.***********
